Coping With Cravings

One question I get a lot is about cravings. Everyone has something different that pushes their buttons, that special food or treat they have trouble saying no to. Part of the training process is imagelearning to understand why you crave the foods you do, and to put strategies in place to help you make healthier choices.

I find many of my clients are using food to fill other needs—and this is something most of them aren’t aware of. A lot of clients, especially women, have trouble with late-night eating. They’ll have healthy, well-balanced meals and snacks throughout the day, but then at night, it all falls apart.

I think this kind of late-night craving and bingeing is more about a sense of nurturing than it is about food. All day long, we find ourselves meeting other people’s needs at work and at home. But then at night, it can be tempting to horde some time and nurturing for ourselves, and that often happens with food.

When late-night cravings strike, I recommend that you go with a healthy choice, and then choose a self-nurturing activity you really enjoy. Read a book, soak in the tub, listen to music—but reward yourself with something other than fattening foods or sugar that will keep you from meeting your fitness goals.

Recognizing that it’s less about the food, and more about the “me time” will keep the cravings under control.
